What should I ask at my OBGYN visit?

I often find patients concerned about their first visit in pregnancy and I would like to alleviate these concerns if possible. Among the possible concerns are included birth plans, ultrasounds in the pregnancy, hospital facilities and amenities, and milestones in the pregnancy.

The first reassurance I want to give you is that in all likelihood, we will see each other at least 7-10 times during your pregnancy. The frequency of the visits is every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 34 weeks and then weekly thereafter. There is plenty of time for questions if you do not have them all today.

Birth plans are wonderful and helpful to the doctor and staff. Please see my quick tips for birth plans coming up in the near future. I will not detail all of the items that "should" go into them, but rather the things that I feel help them to be played out the way you hope.

Your pregnancy will have immunizations recommended at specified timelines, labs at others, and ultrasounds at others. Feel free to ask if for more specifics at your visit. I hope that this helps to give reassurance and confidence when you make that first visit.
